The Costa Novel Award Category

The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry
Nearing her 100th birthday, Roseanne McNulty faces an uncertain future, as the Mental hospital where she's spent most of her adult life prepares for closure. Over the weeks leading up to this upheaval, she talks often with her psychiatrist Dr Grene. This relationship, guarded but trusting after so many years, intensifies as Dr Grene mourns the death of his wife.
Told through their respective journals, the story of Roseanne's family in 1930s Sligo emerges. Refracted through the haze of memory, Roseanne's story becomes an alternative, secret history of Ireland. It is the story of a life blighted by maltreatment and ignorance, yet still marked by a flame of love, passion and hope.

The Other Hand by Chris Cleave
This is a truly special story - to tell you what happens would spoil it... Nevertheless, you need to know that it is extremely funny, but the African beach scene is horrific... The story starts there, but the book doesn't... And it's what happens afterwards that is most important...

A Partisan's Daughter by Louis De Bernières
Set in North London during the Winter of Discontent, A Partisan's Daughter features the relationship between Chris, an unhappily-married, middle-aged Englishman and Roza, a young Serbian woman who has recently moved to London.
While driving through Archway in the course of his job as a medical rep, Chris is captivated by a young woman on a street corner. Clumsily, he engages her in conversation, and he secures an invitation to return one day for a coffee.
His visits become more frequent and Roza starts to tell him the story of her life, drawing him increasingly into her world - from her childhood as a daughter of one of Tito's partisans, through her journey to England and on to her more recent colourful and dangerous past in London.

APA Audies® 2008

The Audies® are the audio book industry's equivalent of the movie industry's Oscars. They are organised by the Audiobook Publishers' Association.

Last year, Isis Publishing (part of the Ulverscroft Group) was thrilled to win an Audies® Award for their audio book Narrow Dog to Carcassonne by Terry Darlington in the non-fiction category.

Once again Isis has a title shortlisted, The Tenderness of Wolves by Stef Penney, this time in the fiction category.
